THE STORY BEHIND THE BOOK

Dr. Thompson-Gray has been intrigued by African Americans who used their ingenuity to produce many of the things that we use in our everyday life. When she learned about their inventions, her response was, “Wow! My people are innovative.” After years of sharing information about African American inventors with her students, friends, and family, she decided to write a story to highlight these ingenious individuals. My People are Innovative: A Story About African American Inventors is Dr. Thompson-Gray’s second book. The story begins with a boy and his sister discussing a well-known African American inventor. The siblings spend the evening learning about other African American inventors from their parents. Stephanie Rogers Carter created the vibrant illustrations in the book, and she did an outstanding job bringing the inventions mentioned in the story to life.
